Creative writing – online resources #5: QuietWrite

Anthony Haynes writes: Here’s an example of where less is more. QuietWrite is a website for writers, the selling point of which is that it offers writers less than any other site. It provides an uncluttered space in which to write. In its own words, its functionality ‘gets out of your way, so you can focus on writing. Period’.

To see what I mean, visit www.quietwrite.com and try its writing space. It offers writers two advantages:

  • lack of distraction;
  • automatic saving.

The lack of distraction is demonstrated very clearly – to my mind, rather amusingly – in QuietWrite’s blog post, ‘An antidote for blogging clutter‘.

You can also use QuietWrite interactively – writers can comment on one another’s work – but you don’t have to. The main benefit of the site is simply that you can concentrate on writing without even worrying about backing up.

  1. Thanks for sharing this app with us, Anthony. I’m going to try it out.

    I also like the free web app “Write or Die” http://writeordie.com/#Web+App

    I bought the desktop version of it and haven’t looked back since. If stop writing with it, Write or Die starts to delete words!

    I’ve tried the free http://750words.com/ to do free writing as well, but prefer Write or Die, since it provides both a carrot and a stick for rough drafting.
